July 8 2011 Swim to Survive Program launch was a success

Our Swim To Survive program this summer on June 28, 29, 30 was a great success for its first annual launch. Through our partnership with the Lifesaving Society, 30 people participated in workshops over the 3 day clinics, and more than 20 people completed the Swim to Survive 3 standards that the Lifesaving Society determined are the key fundamentals in any attempt to reduce drowning:

  1. ROLL into deep water, disorienting entry
  2. TREAD water for one minute
  3. SWIM for 50 metres

Through the excellent efforts of our wonderful aquatics staff, led by Taylor Nelles-McGee as the coordinator, we were able to reach out to our community, many of which were new Canadians, and teach the fundamentals of drowning prevention.

Our statistics will assist the Lifesaving Society in further developing the Swim to Survive program as it becomes the worldwide template in self-rescue.

We are very proud of the staff who led this initiative and look forward to developing it further in upcoming years. Our goal is to become a central site for this program in the GTA.
