Youth Member, St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club
Hi! My name is Zachary and I am 15 years old. I have been a member at St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club for over 9 years and first started attending the STARS program when I was six years old. I think St. Alban’s is an awesome place to make friends because there are lots of people who share the same interests as me, like sports. Being at the Club has given me opportunities that I never would have had like go to Nanaimo, BC on the YMCA Youth Exchange, go snowboarding with the Chill Program, and gain work experience. My time at the Club has taught me how to be a positive role model for my friends and for the younger kids.
In the fall, I was the first boy who participated in the Youth Volunteer Program and I really enjoyed it. It was an amazing experience because I learned how to resolve conflicts, plan fun activities, and learned what it takes to become a St Alban’s staff. Before doing YVP, I thought that staff members pretty much played all the time but it’s way different. Now I understand that it’s a really hard job because to be a great staff you need to make sure that all the kids are enjoying and participating in the activities. I also learned how important it is to know children’s names and engage with them to figure out what they enjoy.
I strongly suggest that youth join the YVP program because it gave me a total of 72 community service hours for school, leadership skills, confidence, and hopefully a job when I turn 16. St. Alban’s is a really great place to be.
