  • How does the waiting list work?

All families interested in registering their child at BGC St. Alban’s Preschool, will be placed on a waiting list at no cost.  Once a space (in the child’s age range/room) becomes available, the applicants on the waiting list will be contacted in order until the space has been filled, considering the child meets criteria to be eligible (age and the date space offered).

Siblings of children already registered in care will be given priority; considering that the child meets the criteria (age and date space offered).

When the child care is contacted by families on the waiting list, to ascertain their position on the list, the supervisor may let families know an approximation of when they will be offered care in a manner that also maintains the privacy and confidentiality of the children listed on it.

Once a child has been offered a secured spot at in the child care centre, BGC St. Alban’s may charge the fees for up to the first month of the child’s attendance, which is to be paid at the time of registration.

  • Can I send food from home?

If you wish to give your child food when you pick up, please wait until your child is away from the preschool.  Due to severe allergic reactions, we do not permit food from home however we understand that there are special circumstances such as providing food for a child’s specific dietary needs.  Food from home must not contain, peanuts, nuts, peanut products or nut products, such as peanut butter, peanut oil, chopped nuts, tree nuts (such as coconut), hydrolyzed plant protein, etc.  Please read labels to ensure these food products are not brought into the preschool.  We strive to be a peanut and nut-free environment.  Please assist us in this endeavor.

  • What do you do for birthdays/cultural celebrations?

Some children enjoy celebrating their birthday with their friends at the Preschool.  If you and your child would like to celebrate their birthday at Preschool, the staff will celebrate the day with special activities (birthday hats, birthday certificates and activities) created with their peers.   We will not be accepting treats, loot bags, etc. from home.

  • How can the parents get involved?

We, at BGC St. Alban's Club Preschool, hope that you will take an active role in our centre.  We believe that childcare is a shared responsibility between family and staff.   A respectful relationship between parents and parents and BGC St. Alban’s staff contribute to the overall experience of every child.   Families are unique and have amazing strengths, and we all benefit from sharing information.  Parents are experts about their children and are their first and most powerful influence.

Parents have interests, roles and responsibilities in addition to family duties so we realize that parents’ time is limited, so there are various ways and degrees of being involved in your child’s care.  They all help us serve the needs of both our parents and children.

    Visiting

You are always welcome in your child’s room.  If your child or the other children in care, have a hard time coping with your presence, you may be asked to keep your visit short.   Attend special events like open houses, family nights, workshops and seasonal events.

    Volunteering

Parents are welcome to volunteer their services for repairs, going on trips, assist with enhanced programs, etc.  Volunteering does require a Police Reference Check to be carried out. Participate and assist with Fundraising initiatives, sitting on the Board of Directors as the preschool representative. Parents however, may not do placements in the preschool.

  • What is the parent meeting schedule?

All meetings will be held virtually at this time.

Group meetings – are run quarterly and all families are invited to meet with each other as a group, and receive pertinent information regarding the preschool as a whole.

Parent interviews are available quarterly throughout the year and upon request, though staff may also request a meeting with the parents. Parent interviews are normally scheduled on Wednesdays.

Parent meetings are held one evening quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month to enable the parents and staff to discuss the program and issues of importance, as well as providing an open forum for issues brought forward by anyone in attendance. All parents are invited and childcare is provided during the meeting at no cost.

  • What is the Withdrawal Policy?

Allowing your child to say goodbye to their friends and the staff at the centre is very important.  Please let your child know that it is their last day so that saying goodbye and making new starts are seen as a positive experience.

For parents wishing to withdraw their child from care; 30 days (thirty days) written notice is required.    If you need assistance writing a withdrawal letter, please ask the supervisor of the centre for help.  If 30 days (thirty days) notice is not given, 30 days (thirty days) full-fee payment is required.

Subsidized children who do not attend the program until the last day stated in their written notice may be considered to have given improper notice and may have to reimburse Toronto Children’s Services for the absent days.

If BGC St. Alban’s Preschool initiates the withdrawal of a child/family 30 days (thirty days) written notice can be given.   We also reserve the right for immediate withdrawal, for the reasons stated below:

Failure to abide by the policies and procedures (including the Anti-Racism and Freedom from Discrimination Policies)

The child’s behavior is endangering the safety or well being of themselves, other children or staff

    Non-payment of fees

No available space in the next age group

Inability to meet the needs of the child/family

Failure to meet or abide by conditions set out in a letter of warning.

We understand that incidents and disputes will occur among children and it is not our intent to exclude children who are going through developmental stages and phases.

If a child’s behavior is endangering the safety or well being of themselves, the other children or the staff (e.g. Repeated violent physical acts against children or staff, a child who leaves the care of the centre staff, either on or off site, etc.) the child may have to be withdrawn from the centre.  This would only be done after other options have been explored (e.g. working with the resource consultant assigned to our centre).

Any threat of violence or any violent act against any person while they are on centre property or during any centre-related functions (e.g. Field trips, meetings, social events, etc.) or during off site interactions between employees of the centre and parents/children will be immediately reported to the police and is reason for immediate withdrawal of the family from the centre.

Parents may be given a letter of warning of withdrawal.  The letter will specify terms of conditional enrollment, if these terms are not met, the child/family will be withdrawn immediately.

If withdrawal of a child/family is being considered but further investigation needs to occur, the child/family may be suspended from the centre until the investigation is completed by the Supervisor and/or Board of Directors.

If a child is denied admission to, or is withdrawn from the centre, due to our inability to accommodate the child’s needs or the family circumstances (for example but on limited to a child’s violent behavior), the following procedure will take place:

    1. A meeting will take place with the parents
    2. The meeting will be documented and the documentation will be kept on file
    3. The Resource Consultant assigned to our centre, will be immediately notified of the situation and another meeting with the parents will be arranged and documented.
    4. Our Children’s Services District Consultant will be immediately notified of the situation
    5. The Executive Director/Board of Directors will be immediately notified of the situation and a meeting arranged with all parties.
    6. Outside agencies will be notified of the situation (if applicable)
    7. Efforts will be made to assist the parents in finding alternative care for their child, in conjunction with the centre’s Resource Consultant
    8. Staff will assist with the child’s transition to the new childcare arrangements, with written parental permission.  Permission for this to occur must also be received from the new child care centre.
